  Leviticus 11 [Commentary] [Map] Biblical Art and Illustrations
The LORD spoke again to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them, The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them: And Jehovah spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them, And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them.
"Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, `These are the creatures which you may eat from all the animals that are on the earth. Speak to the people of Israel, saying: From among all the land animals, these are the creatures that you may eat. Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the living things which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. Speak to the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.
`Whatever divides a hoof, thus making split hoofs, and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat. Any animal that has divided hoofs and is cleft-footed and chews the cud-- such you may eat. Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, [and] cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that may ye eat. Whatever parteth the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and cheweth the cud among the beasts, that shall ye eat.
`Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these, among those which chew the cud, or among those which divide the hoof: the camel, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you. But among those that chew the cud or have divided hoofs, you shall not eat the following: the camel, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that part the hoof: the camel, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. Nevertheless, these shall ye not eat, of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean to you.
`Likewise, the shaphan, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you; The rock badger, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. And the coney, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean to you.
the rabbit also, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you; The hare, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. And the hare, because she cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, she is unclean unto you. And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof: he is unclean to you.
and the pig, for though it divides the hoof, thus making a split hoof, it does not chew cud, it is unclean to you. The pig, for even though it has divided hoofs and is cleft-footed, it does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. And the swine, because he parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, but cheweth not the cud, he is unclean unto you. And the swine, though he divideth the hoof, and is cloven-footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.
`You shall not eat of their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you. Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch; they are unclean for you. Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcasses ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.
`These you may eat, whatever is in the water: all that have fins and scales, those in the water, in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat. These you may eat, of all that are in the waters. Everything in the waters that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the streams-- such you may eat. These may ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, that may ye eat. These shall ye eat, of all that are in the waters: whatever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
`But whatever is in the seas and in the rivers that does not have fins and scales among all the teeming life of the water, and among all the living creatures that are in the water, they are detestable things to you, But anything in the seas or the streams that does not have fins and scales, of the swarming creatures in the waters and among all the other living creatures that are in the waters-- they are detestable to you And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are an abomination unto you, And all that have not fins nor scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living animal which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination to you:
and they shall be abhorrent to you; you may not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses you shall detest. and detestable they shall remain. Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall regard as detestable. and they shall be an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses ye shall have in abomination. They shall be even an abomination to you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcasses in abomination.
`Whatever in the water does not have fins and scales is abhorrent to you. Everything in the waters that does not have fins and scales is detestable to you. Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that is an abomination unto you. Whatever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination to you.
`These, moreover, you shall detest among the birds; they are abhorrent, not to be eaten: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard, These you shall regard as detestable among the birds. They shall not be eaten; they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the osprey, And these ye shall have in abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the gier-eagle, and the ospray, And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,
and the kite and the falcon in its kind, the buzzard, the kite of any kind; and the kite, and the falcon after its kind, And the vultur, and the kite after his kind;
every raven in its kind, every raven of any kind; every raven after its kind, Every raven after his kind;
and the ostrich and the owl and the sea gull and the hawk in its kind, the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk of any kind; and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the seamew, and the hawk after its kind, And the owl, and the night-hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,
and the little owl and the cormorant and the great owl, the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,
and the white owl and the pelican and the carrion vulture, the water hen, the desert owl, the carrion vulture, and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the vulture, And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier-eagle,
and the stork, the heron in its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat. the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat. and the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat. And the stork, and the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.
`All the winged insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you. All winged insects that walk upon all fours are detestable to you. All winged creeping things that go upon all fours are an abomination unto you. All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination to you.
`Yet these you may eat among all the winged insects which walk on all fours: those which have above their feet jointed legs with which to jump on the earth. But among the winged insects that walk on all fours you may eat those that have jointed legs above their feet, with which to leap on the ground. Yet these may ye eat of all winged creeping things that go upon all fours, which have legs above their feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth. Yet these may ye eat, of every flying creeping animal that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap with upon the earth;
`These of them you may eat: the locust in its kinds, and the devastating locust in its kinds, and the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds. Of them you may eat: the locust according to its kind, the bald locust according to its kind, the cricket according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind. Even these of them ye may eat: the locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind. Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the beetle after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.
`But all other winged insects which are four-footed are detestable to you. But all other winged insects that have four feet are detestable to you. But all winged creeping things, which have four feet, are an abomination unto you. But all other flying creeping animals, which have four feet, shall be an abomination to you.
`By these, moreover, you will be made unclean: whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening, By these you shall become unclean; whoever touches the carcass of any of them shall be unclean until the evening, And by these ye shall become unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcass of them shall be unclean until the even; And for these ye shall be unclean: whoever toucheth the carcass of them shall be unclean until the evening.
and whoever picks up any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. and whoever carries any part of the carcass of any of them shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. And whosoever beareth [aught] of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. And whoever beareth aught of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.
`Concerning all the animals which divide the hoof but do not make a split hoof, or which do not chew cud, they are unclean to you: whoever touches them becomes unclean. Every animal that has divided hoofs but is not cleft-footed or does not chew the cud is unclean for you; everyone who touches one of them shall be unclean. Every beast which parteth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, is unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean. The carcasses of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not cloven-footed, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean to you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.
`Also whatever walks on its paws, among all the creatures that walk on all fours, are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening, All that walk on their paws, among the animals that walk on all fours, are unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them shall be unclean until the evening, And whatsoever goeth upon its paws, among all beasts that go on all fours, they are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcass shall be unclean until the even. And whatever goeth upon its paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean to you: whoever toucheth their carcass shall be unclean until the evening.
and the one who picks up their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean to you. and the one who carries the carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean for you. And he that beareth the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you. And he that beareth the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening: they are unclean to you.
`Now these are to you the unclean among the swarming things which swarm on the earth: the mole, and the mouse, and the great lizard in its kinds, These are unclean for you among the creatures that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, the mouse, the great lizard according to its kind, And these are they which are unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kind, These also shall be unclean to you among the creeping animals that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise, after its kind,
and the gecko, and the crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand reptile, and the chameleon. the gecko, the land crocodile, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon. and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon. And the ferret and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.
`These are to you the unclean among all the swarming things; whoever touches them when they are dead becomes unclean until evening. These are unclean for you among all that swarm; whoever touches one of them when they are dead shall be unclean until the evening. These are they which are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even. These are unclean to you among all that creep: whoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the evening.
`Also anything on which one of them may fall when they are dead becomes unclean, including any wooden article, or clothing, or a skin, or a sack--any article of which use is made--it shall be put in the water and be unclean until evening, then it becomes clean. And anything upon which any of them falls when they are dead shall be unclean, whether an article of wood or cloth or skin or sacking, any article that is used for any purpose; it shall be dipped into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening, and then it shall be clean. And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean. And upon whatever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it is any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatever vessel it is, in which any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; so it shall be cleansed.
`As for any earthenware vessel into which one of them may fall, whatever is in it becomes unclean and you shall break the vessel. And if any of them falls into any earthen vessel, all that is in it shall be unclean, and you shall break the vessel. And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean, and it ye shall break. And every earthen vessel, into which any of them falleth, whatever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.
`Any of the food which may be eaten, on which water comes, shall become unclean, and any liquid which may be drunk in every vessel shall become unclean. Any food that could be eaten shall be unclean if water from any such vessel comes upon it; and any liquid that could be drunk shall be unclean if it was in any such vessel. All food [therein] which may be eaten, that on which water cometh, shall be unclean; and all drink that may be drunk in every [such] vessel shall be unclean. Of all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drank in every such vessel, shall be unclean.
`Everything, moreover, on which part of their carcass may fall becomes unclean; an oven or a stove shall be smashed; they are unclean and shall continue as unclean to you. Everything on which any part of the carcass falls shall be unclean; whether an oven or stove, it shall be broken in pieces; they are unclean, and shall remain unclean for you. And every thing whereupon [any part] of their carcass falleth shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces: they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you. And every thing on which any part of their carcass falleth, shall be unclean; whether an oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you.
`Nevertheless a spring or a cistern collecting water shall be clean, though the one who touches their carcass shall be unclean. But a spring or a cistern holding water shall be clean, while whatever touches the carcass in it shall be unclean. Nevertheless a fountain or a pit wherein is a gathering of water shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcass shall be unclean. Nevertheless, a fountain or pit, in which there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcass shall be unclean.
`If a part of their carcass falls on any seed for sowing which is to be sown, it is clean. If any part of their carcass falls upon any seed set aside for sowing, it is clean; And if [aught] of their carcass fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean. And if any part of their carcass shall fall upon any sowing-seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.
`Though if water is put on the seed and a part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you. but if water is put on the seed and any part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you. But if water be put upon the seed, and [aught] of their carcass fall thereon, it is unclean unto you. But if any water shall be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcass shall fall on it, it shall be unclean to you.
`Also if one of the animals dies which you have for food, the one who touches its carcass becomes unclean until evening. If an animal of which you may eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening. And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcass thereof shall be unclean until the even. And if any beast, of which ye may eat, shall die; he that toucheth its carcass shall be unclean until the evening.
`He too, who eats some of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening, and the one who picks up its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. Those who eat of its carcass shall wash their clothes and be unclean until the evening; and those who carry the carcass shall wash their clothes and be unclean until the evening. And he that eateth of the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. And he that eateth of its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening; he also that beareth its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.
`Now every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable, not to be eaten. All creatures that swarm upon the earth are detestable; they shall not be eaten. And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth is an abomination; it shall not be eaten. And every creeping animal that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.
`Whatever crawls on its belly, and whatever walks on all fours, whatever has many feet, in respect to every swarming thing that swarms on the earth, you shall not eat them, for they are detestable. Whatever moves on its belly, and whatever moves on all fours, or whatever has many feet, all the creatures that swarm upon the earth, you shall not eat; for they are detestable. Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all fours, or whatsoever hath many feet, even all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination. Whatever goeth upon the belly, and whatever goeth upon all four, or whatever hath more feet among all creeping animals that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.
`Do not render yourselves detestable through any of the swarming things that swarm; and you shall not make yourselves unclean with them so that you become unclean. You shall not make yourselves detestable with any creature that swarms; you shall not defile yourselves with them, and so become unclean. Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby. Ye shall not make your selves abominable with any creeping animal that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled by them.
`For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth. For I am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming creature that moves on the earth. For I am Jehovah your God: sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that moveth upon the earth. For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping animal that creepeth upon the earth.
`For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.' " For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt, to be your God; you shall be holy, for I am holy. For I am Jehovah that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. For I am the LORD that bringeth you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
This is the law regarding the animal and the bird, and every living thing that moves in the waters and everything that swarms on the earth, This is the law pertaining to land animal and bird and every living creature that moves through the waters and every creature that swarms upon the earth, This is the law of the beast, and of the bird, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth; This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth;
to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the edible creature and the creature which is not to be eaten. to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the living creature that may be eaten and the living creature that may not be eaten. to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten. To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.

The American Standard Version (ASV) of the Holy Bible is in the Public Domain. Please feel free to copy it, give it away, memorize it, publish it, sell it, or whatever God leads you to do with it.

The American Standard Version of 1901 is an Americanization of the English Revised Bible, which is an update of the KJV to less archaic spelling and greater accuracy of translation. It has been called "The Rock of Biblical Honesty." It is the product of the work of over 50 Evangelical Christian scholars.

While the ASV retains many archaic word forms, it is still more understandable to the modern reader than the KJV in many passages. The ASV also forms the basis for several modern English translations, including the World English Bible (http://www.eBible.org/bible/WEB), which is also in the Public Domain. The ASV uses "Jehovah" for God's proper name. While the current consensus is that this Holy Name was more likely pronounced "Yahweh," it is refreshing to see this rendition instead of the overloading of the word "Lord" that the KJV, NASB, and many others do.

Pronouns referring to God are not capitalized in the ASV, as they are not in the NIV and some others, breaking the tradition of the KJV. Since Hebrew has no such thing as tense, and the oldest Greek manuscripts are all upper case, anyway, this tradition was based only on English usage around 1600, anyway. Not capitalizing these pronouns solves some translational problems, such as the coronation psalms, which refer equally well to an earthly king and to God.
