Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae... Acts 18:18b
City: "The E seaport of Corinth, located on the Saronic Gulf ca. 11 km E of the city and ca.
4 km S of Isthmia. Two NT references (Acts 18:18 and Rom 16:1) confirm the existence of an early
Christian community at the site and the name of one Phoebe, a deaconess of the church...Two artificial
rubble breakwaters were constructed to provide a deep-water anchorage that was available for use during
the normal sailing season...and that was both larger and more suitable for Roman Corinth's expanded
economic role." (Freedman:Volume 1:881)
Summary: Before sailing to Ephesus, Paul had his head shaved. This probably represented
a temporary Nazarite vow. "Different vows were frequently taken to express thanks for delivereance
from grave dangers. Shaving the head marked the end of a vow." (NIV Study Bible:1682)
